The clasp matters more than anything else

This is the part nobody talks about, and it's the reason most earrings fail the sleep test.

A stud with a butterfly back has a post that sticks out behind your ear. Lie on it and that post presses into your lobe all night. The backs also work loose — which is how one earring ends up in the bedsheets.

A French hook falls out the moment you move.

Solid sterling silver doesn't do that. Neither does 18k gold vermeil, which is a thick layer of real gold bonded to a sterling silver base — a genuine precious metal underneath, not a coating over cheap alloy.

Now, the honest bit about water

Most jewellery brands claim their pieces are waterproof. It isn't quite true, and it's worth knowing why.

What's genuinely fine: getting caught in the rain. Washing your hands. Sweating at the gym. An occasional shower. Your earrings are water-resistant and none of this will hurt them.

What you should skip: swimming pools, mineral hot springs, and the sea. Chlorine and salt are both harsh on any gold finish, and repeated exposure will dull it over time.

What causes more damage than water does: perfume, hairspray, sunscreen and lotions. These are the actual enemy. Put your earrings in after you've done all that, not before.

On daily showering — you can, but we'd rather be straight with you: doing it every single day, for years, will shorten the life of any gold finish. Skipping the shower a few times a week meaningfully extends how long they look new. That's not a rule, just the honest maths.

And if silver does dull over time, it isn't damage. Sterling silver reacts gently with air and skin — a normal property of a precious metal, not a fault. A quick buff with the polishing cloth in your box brings it straight back.

The four-part test

A pair of earrings has genuinely passed if it handles all of these without a thought.

At the gym. Sweat is fine. Flush-fitting huggies won't catch on a hoodie, a towel, or a barbell — which is more than can be said for dangly earrings and a resistance band.

At work. A small huggie reads as considered rather than casual. It works with a blazer and it works with a t-shirt. And if you're on a headset all day, there's nothing protruding to press against it.
